A Prayer to the God of My Life

Psalm 42:7-8

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls;

All your waves and breakers have swept over me.

By day the LORD directs His love,

At night His song is with me—

A prayer to the God of my life.

Dear God,

Remember when I played in the ocean waves as a child? Even as a strong swimmer, I remember being caught in the undertow, flipped beneath the surface until I lost all sense of direction. I remember the sharp sting of panic, kicking desperately toward what I hoped was the sky, gasping as saltwater burned my nose. Treading water in the deep, blinking through the spray, praying the next crest wouldn’t drown me. I had to turn toward the shore and let the breakers carry me home. The ocean was so powerful, no matter how strong I thought I was.

God, I often convince myself I can handle life on my own. But the heavy waves keep crashing. The undertow drags me down, sweeping away my peace, multiplying my guilt, leaving my questions unanswered and my heart’s desires unmet. Once again, I don’t know which way is up. I am kicking toward the surface, unsure if I will reach the air in time. Where are You in this deep water?

Yet, when I look back, I see You have directed every step of my life. When I couldn’t feel You, You were holding me. When I was lost, You guided my path. When I was drowning, You carried me. Day by day, You send people, comfort, and grace to speak Your truth into my heart. At night, You give me rest and restore my weary soul.

You are the God of my life—despite all my shortcomings. When I didn’t know how to reach for You, You reached down for me. You met my anger with peace, my darkness with a spark of hope, and my confusion with Your steady voice. You have never abandoned me. Even when I have no words left to pray, Your Spirit still speaks within me. You never stop fighting for me.

I don’t have the answers for the deep waters I’m in today. The weight of my unanswered questions feels heavy, and the path ahead is hidden. But my hope rests securely in You. I trust Your goodness. I trust Your wisdom. I trust what You can do when I am helpless, and what You know when I am blind. You will stay beside me now, because You always have.

I praise You in advance—not just for what You will do for me, but for what You are refining in me.

You are the God of my life.

Amen.
