Facing Your Goliath
Are you facing a “Goliath” today? It might be a daunting life situation, an overwhelming mountain of tasks, or a season of deep self-doubt. Perhaps you are standing before a problem that seems to have no solution—an issue you know you cannot handle alone. It feels too big, too strong, and it is standing directly in the way of your best self.
The Champion and the Shepherd
In 1 Samuel 17, Goliath is described as a champion. He was a seasoned warrior, confident in his own strength, and a legend in the Philistine camp. To the Israelites, he was an insurmountable wall; he was too large to fight and too powerful to defeat. He was the ultimate barrier to their victory.
We often jump straight to the end of David’s story because we love his courage, his bravery, and his sudden success. We want to be the David who defies giants! But we forget that David’s path to the battlefield was paved with rejection:
- He was overlooked: The youngest brother, left behind to watch the sheep.
- He was mocked: His own brothers called him conceited and wicked when he arrived at the camp.
- He was doubted: King Saul looked at his youth and said “No.”
- He was ridiculed: Goliath looked at him and saw nothing but a boy with a stick.
The Masterpiece in the Making
Whatever is standing in front of you—inducing that same trepidation the Israelites felt—remember this: Take up your armor. Even if that armor isn’t traditional, and even if your only weapon feels like a simple slingshot, step forward.
Let God work through you. There is a great blessing ahead, but the path there often requires a “chiseling.” God is working to claim your heart, refining you into a masterpiece through the very struggle you are facing.
Walk into this week with the quiet confidence of David: “I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” The giant may be big, but he is not bigger than the One who stands with you.
